Ian Fleming love letters to be auctioned

27-Mar-2014 • Event

Letters sent by would-be author Ian Fleming to his Swiss girlfriend, Edith Morpurgo, will go under the hammer next week. Bookseller Peter Harrington will take the letters to the New York antiquarian book fair and it is expected that this curious piece of Bond history could be worth up to £47,500.

"[The letters] show romantic flirting, and a rather sadistic side to Fleming as well," senior specialist Adam Douglas told The Guardian. "They were written so early in his career that he was of course not famous … so the chances of somebody keeping this kind of material are quite low … They're by an author well before he became an author, playing around with the things he would turn to gold."

The letters themselves are dated between 1934 and 1935, when Fleming was a twenty-something. Fleming met Morpurgo whilst at the finishing school at Kitzbuhel.
