Former James Bond 21 candidate director Matthew Vaughn to `reinvent the whole spy franchise`

16-Feb-2005 • Bond News

"Layer Cake" director Mathhew Vaughn, who was at one point in negotiations to direct James Bond 21 ("Casino Royale" 2006) before the 2005 release date was canned, has said he will be creating his own spy movie.

Following an announcement that he has parted company with the troubled production of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", Vaughn said he will be creating his own down to earth spy thriller - perhaps in a reaction to the success of the Bourne franchise, his failure to secure the director job of Bond 21, and the often criticised drift in the recent 007 films away from Connery's harder-edged outings.

Vaughn told Teletext (UK): "It's going to be very cool and take a long time to write but we've nearly finished the treatment. It's an original script and we're going to do all the things that you can't do in any mainstream spy movie. We're going to try to reinvent the whole spy franchise"

The project will be co-written with "Trainspotting" scribe John Hodge.
