Scoring is well under way for "Casino Royale" by composer David Arnold. MI6 reports on what to expect, and clears up some rumours...

Scoring Casino Royale
30th August 2006

David Arnold returns to compose the score for the 21st James Bond film following three previous outings, "Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day". But "Casino Royale" faces a fresh challenge for Arnold, as he has to usher in the era of a new 007 - Daniel Craig.

As the film goes back to Bond's roots, with the pre-title sequence taking place before he has gained his 'double-o' status, how will the Bond theme fit in? According to rumours, the famous guitar riff will not feature until the closing scene of the movie. With that restriction in place, Arnold says he has set out to create new motifs for the film. A recent quote in movie magazine Hotdog got fans buzzing that the film may include part of the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" instrumental theme, but this is not true. Arnold explained on his official site that he referenced this, his favourite Bond soundtrack, as similar to "Casino Royale" only in that there will be new musical strands running throughout the film which will not be the Bond theme.

Bond music aficionados will have noticed motifs from the song "Surrender" throughout the soundtrack to "Tomorrow never Dies", which was planned as the title song before Sheryl Crow was signed to perform the title song and K. D. Lang's ballad was shifted to the end credits. Based on his comments, it would appear that Arnold is attempting this feat again, and is in good stead due to his collaboration in the title song writing with performer Chris Cornell.

On the subject of the title song, Cornell recently spoke about his work on the new Bond theme: "I just got a call," he recalls, "and at first I thought there must be some kind of mistake." But after seeing the script and studying up on the new Bond actor, Daniel Craig, Cornell decided "I'm actually the right guy for the job. Everybody I met with said the same thing - 'This isn't anything like any other James Bond film, so we don't really want that song, either. So go do whatever you want.'"

You Know My Name
Cornell describes the new song as "more uptempo and a little more aggressive than any other Bond theme has been, maybe since Paul McCartney ("Live And Let Die"). It has an orchestra, but it also has some angry sounding guitar, and it's got feedback."

Arnold and Cornell finished recording "You Know My Name" in Air Studios in London (then mixed in L.A.) in late August and delivered it to Eon Productions and Sony. Arnold's focus then shifted to scoring the film.

With only rough cuts at this stage, Arnold could not comment on "what was in and what was out" of the final film, but left the door open to a suggestion that it could feature a song called "La Vie En Rose" in the scene where Bond and Vesper are dining together - a reference to the original novel by Ian Fleming.

To clear up another rumour, none of Arnold's work or any segment of the title song "You Know My Name" has featured in any of the "Casino Royale" trailers, production videos of podcasts to date.

Orchestrating and conducting the score for "Casino Royale" will be Nicholas Dodd, who has worked with Arnold on his previous three Bond scores.

The release date of "You Know My Name" has still to be confirmed, but its first air-play is expected in mid-October.

Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (Eon Productions) and directed by Martin Campbell, CASINO ROYALE is scheduled for release November 17, 2006. Principal photography started on January 30th 2006, with locations in the UK, Czech Republic (Prague), Italy, and the Bahamas. It will be British actor Daniel Craig’s first outing as James Bond. He is the sixth actor to play the 007 role in the franchise.

The film also stars Judi Dench, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini, Caterina Murino, Simon Abkarian, Tobias Menzies, Ivana Milicevic, Clemens Schik, Ludger Pistor, Claudio Santamaria and Isaach de Bankole.
