Desert Island Discs - Judi Dench

18th March 2012

Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme first broadcast on 29 January 1942. It is the second longest-running radio programme, and is the longest-running factual programme in the history of radio. Originally devised and presented by Roy Plomley, each week a famous guest ("castaway") is asked to choose eight pieces of music, a book and a luxury item for their imaginary stay on the island, while discussing their lives and the reasons for their choices.

On Sunday 12th April 1998, between the release of her second and third outings as Bond's superior, Judi Dench was the guest for that week's edition of Desert Island Discs.

Dench's top eight musical choices were:

  1. The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams

  2. March (from the Funeral Music for Queen Mary) by Henry Purcell

  3. Much Ado About Nothing Act 4, Scene 1 by William Shakespeare

  4. Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh (Castaway's favourite)

  5. Blue in Green by Miles Davis

  6. I Was Glad by Sir Hubert Parry

  7. Non Nobis, Domine by Patrick Doyle

  8. Soave sia il vento (from Cosi fan tutte) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Guests are also invited to select a single book and luxury item, for which Dench selected an Ordnance Survey map of the world, and The Man with a Glove painting by Titian, respectively.
