Desert Island Discs - Ralph Fiennes

15th April 2012

Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme first broadcast on 29 January 1942. It is the second longest-running radio programme, and is the longest-running factual programme in the history of radio. Originally devised and presented by Roy Plomley, each week a famous guest ("castaway") is asked to choose eight pieces of music, a book and a luxury item for their imaginary stay on the island, while discussing their lives and the reasons for their choices.

On Sunday 31st October 1999, Ralph Fiennes, who plays a mysterious government agent in "Skyfall" was the guest for that week's edition of Desert Island Discs.

Fiennes' top eight musical choices were:

  1. Blow The Wind Southerly by Kathleen Ferrier

  2. Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie

  3. Requiem in D minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  4. Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111 by Ludwig van Beethoven

  5. When My Sugar Walks Down The Street by Turk Murphy Jazz Band

  6. Mir ist so wunderbar (from Fidelio) by Ludwig van Beethoven (castaway's favourite)

  7. Feeling Good by Nina Simone

  8. St Matthew Passion - Mache dich, mein Herze by Johann Sebastian Bach

Guests are also invited to select a single book and luxury item, for which Fiennes selected A la Recherche du Temps Perdu by Marcel Proust, and Pen and limited supplies of ink and paper, respectively.
