Dame Judi Dench clarifies eye condition news

Late last week, Dame Judi Dench revealed in an interview that her quality of sight had dramatically reduced due to the onset of a condition called macular degeneration. It is known to affect up to one-third of adults over the age of 75.

A flurry of press coverage over the weekend that splashed dramatic 'blind' headlines has caused the actress to issue a statement to clarify matters.

"In response to the numerous articles in the media concerning my eye condition - macular degeneration - I do not wish for this to be overblown," Dench said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

"This condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with. It's something that I have learnt to cope with and adapt to - and it will not lead to blindness."
