Details on the DAD DVD `DTS-ES Matrix` surround-sound audio track

02-Mar-2003 • Die Another Day

The "Die Another Day" DVD specification features not only a standard 5.1 EX Surround audio track, and will also include a special DTS-ES Matrix Surround Track.

DTS Europe told DVD Times what this will mean for kitted up Bond fans.

"The `DTS-ES Matrix` soundtrack is a DTS 5.1 soundtrack with matrixed Centre Surround effects in the Left and Right Surround channel.

For those with a 5.1 speaker set-up and a 5.1 DTS decoder, this will mean that you will hear a `phantom` centre surround behind you, in-between LS and RS. For those with a DTS-ES 6.1 capable decoder and a sixth speaker, you will in fact hear the extra information via that speaker, as it will be extracted from LS and RS (`matrix decoded`) and brought back into the Centre Surround channel by the DTS decoder.

Whenever a movie is advertised as featuring a `DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete` soundtrack, it will also carry a discrete version of the CS in the DTS soundtrack, as well as a matrixed version in LS/RS, making it compatible with both 6.1 and 5.1 speaker setups."
