James Bond tops UK culture chart with Casino Royale DVD

15-Sep-2007 • Casino Royale

James Bond's Casino Royale has topped the UK's first "culture chart", bringing together sales of DVDs, books, CDs and computer games in one rundown - reports the BBC.

The Casino Royale DVD sold 2.3 million copies in the first half of 2007, ahead of The Queen DVD in second place.

The top six titles were all DVDs. Amy Winehouse's album Back to Black was the most popular music CD at number seven.

The best-selling book was Jed Rubenfeld's The Interpretation of Murder at number 10.

Spider-Man 3 was the top computer game in the first six months of the year - but failed to make it into the overall top 20.

Games tend to sell in smaller numbers than CDs, books and DVDs, but are more expensive.

"Spider-Man 3 may not have made it into the top 20 by volume, but if the chart was ranked by sales value, it would most likely be in the top three," said Steve Redmond of the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), who compiled the chart.

With artists such as Mirren and Winehouse featuring prominently, the chart was "a vindication of British creativity", Mr Redmond said.

The only other book in the top 20 was Marian Keyes' Anybody Out There?

Among the other albums on the list were Take That's Beautiful World and the Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare.
