The Cape Town Film Commission expects to see action in their city, but James Bond may have other plans elsewhere in South Africa...

Cape Town Expects

3rd October 2011

It was confirmed last month that detailed plans to shoot the 23rd James Bond film in India were jettisoned when official approvals took too long to secure, and the planned scenes were to be transposed to their back-up - South Africa. Location filming in South Africa does not necessarily mean Cape Town, but the city's film commission seems to think it does.

The Cape Town Film Commission's CEO Denis Lille spoke to Times Live today to try and secure some 007 action for the nation's capital. "We have been publicly lobbying the Bond production company," Lille said. "There has been no official announcement yet, but there has also been no denial. The rumour has been out there a couple of months, so I am assuming that things will be happening soon."

A 007 adventure in the Roger Moore era may have taken advantage of the Film Commission's push to have Bond swinging between the Table Mountain cable cars and swimming in the shark-laden ocean surrounding the city, but the features may fall on deaf ears when it comes to a Bond production in the 21st Century. The planned Bond 23 stunt sequences on trains may be better suited to other parts of the country.

Given that filming in Pinewood is scheduled to kick off in November, and location shooting is expected to start in January, it would seem that Cape Town may not be part of the Bond 23 production team's plans if the city's Film Commission is still waiting to start discussions.

Openly mocking the Indian authorities about their struggle to finalize Bond 23 plans may have also hurt the Cape Town Film Commission's standing.

But Lille continues to argue the case for Cape Town, especially as Bond has a midas touch when it comes to boosting the lucrative tourism industry. "Audiences tend to visit the locations where Bond movies are set," he explained. "Some people would want to find the pub where Bond had a drink for example. We wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any problems if the producers wanted to bring the Bond film to Cape Town. The Western Cape government has said bring it. We want it filmed here."
