Ian Fleming Biopic Announced

British director Duncan Jones will helm a biopic about the life
of James Bond creator Ian
Fleming, in a new project by production
company K5 Film. The film is said to chart the life of Fleming,
through is wartime service as a Naval Intelligence Office, his
journalism, world travel, and of course his later years penning
007 adventures and seeing them make the silver screen before
his death in 1964.
Unlike the previously
touted Fleming biopic project, which was under stewardship
of Leonardo DiCaprio, this newly announced film has the backing
of the Ian Fleming estate, who are members of K5 Film. The company
is headed by Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur, PalmStar Media Capital's
Kevin Frakes and Liberty Films' Stuart Fenegan will produce in
association with Jim Young and Robert Laycock of the Ian Fleming
Estate. The project is already fully financed through K5 and
PalmStar, and the distribution and international rights sales
will be handled by K5 International.

The project was introduced to potential buyers
this week at the Cannes Film Festival. Jones, who is now casting
the film,
will direct Matthew Brown's screenplay based off the biography
'Ian Fleming, the Man Behind James Bond' by
Andrew Lycett.
He said: "Fleming lived through one of the most perilous
periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique
vantage point of all the players, all the stakes. He witnesses
true heroism first-hand. And he saw the evil men could do. Then,
when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential
question for me is where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?"
“Fleming is a larger than life character
and it’s fantastic to be bringing him to the big screen
with Duncan. The opportunity to make a period action film about
the life of Fleming and origins of Bond – a hero we all
grew up idolising – is too great for Duncan and [us] to
resist. Duncan
is one of the hottest directors currently working in film and
everyone has been waiting to see what he
would do
next,” said K5’s Simon and Baur.
Jones made his feature film directorial debut
with the phenomenal "Moon" (2009),
which he followed up with the solid sci-fi outing "Source
Code" (2011). Aside from the Fleming film, he is working
on a follow-up to "Moon", and another science fiction
film, called "Mute", which takes place in a future
Berlin. His famous father, David Bowie, was wanted by producer
Cubby Broccoli to play villain Max Zorin in the 1985 film "A
View To A Kill", but the part eventually went to Oscar-winner
Christopher Walken.
The Fleming biopic will start production later this year and
open in cinemas in 2013.
