Debbie Harry may have done a deal to sing the 'For Your Eyes Only' title theme but fate would see her drop out of the project
Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry made a deal to perform the title song of the 1981 James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only", which in pre-production, was looking like it would usher in a new 007 as Roger Moore had not renewed his contract. Harry produced a demo track which was a broad song about secrecy and a relationship, with little to do with the film's plot.
With John Barry unable to work in the UK due to tax reasons, producers signed composer Bill Conti to score the film, and they dictated that he would also write the theme song too. This upset Blondie, who then dropped out of the project. Scottish singing sensation Sheena Easton was signed up to perform an entirely new song with music by Conti and lyrics by Michael Leeson. It went on to be nominated at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes in 1982.
Also that year, Blondie released their concept album 'The Hunter' and included their 007 title track submission. It would be their last original album until 1999.
Lyrics
Don't look over my shoulder
I'm trying to read
Remember those intimate moments
Don't forget my privacy
We both have our orders
And a trick up the sleeve
There's no use pretending
You're alseep
The subject was roses
Quine geology
Deliberate notice
You're taking of me
Caution and danger
Are not family
Don't try turning the tables
On me!
Too long and too lonely
For your eyes only
Secretly
Enjoy the paradox
You thinking I'm the fox
Can't ya see
You personally
So many people know who you are
And they know how you've been looking
For your counterpart
We're chasing an echo
In sonic 3-D
If I laugh without joking
Make believe
Too long and too lonely
For your eyes only
Secretly
Enjoy the paradox
You thinking I'm the fox
Can't ya see
You personally
Too long and too lonely
For your eyes only
Totally
You personally
I like what you're showing
For your eyes only
Secretly
For your eyes only
