Lulu - The Man With The Golden Gun

MI6 readers voted in their thousands during 2012 to rank all the James Bond title theme songs. Join us as we count down the results...

The theme song to "The Man With The Golden Gun" was performed by Scottish singer Lulu, composed by John Barry, and the lyrics were written by Don Black.

Barry considered the theme tune - the only Bond film title track not to chart as a single in either the UK or US - and score to be among the weakest of his contributions to the series. He had just three weeks to compose all the music.

"It's the least interesting Bond song. It's the one I hate the most. It's the one thing I think was really... bad. It was bad." - John Barry

Certainly the title song is notable for having especially suggestive lyrics, and during a TV celebration for the 40th anniversary of the series, Lulu's performance was introduced with reference to it being the raunchiest of all Bond songs.

"I thought - try and write provocative, sensual lyrics. They were a bit on the nose. It's a piece of delicious nonsense - cartoon hokum!" - Don Black

Lyrics
He has a powerful weapon
charges a million a shot,
An assassin's second to none,
The man with the golden gun.

Lurking in some darkened doorway,
Or crouched on a roof top somewhere,
In the next room, or this very one
The man with the golden gun.

Love is required whenever he's hired,
It comes just before the kill.
No-one can catch him, no hit man can match him
With his million dollar skill.

A golden shot means another poor victim,
Has come to a glittering end,
For a price, he'll erase anyone
The man with the golden gun.

His eye may be on you or me.
Who will he bang?
We shall see.

Love is required whenever he's hired,
It comes just before the kill.
No-one can catch him, no hit man can match him
With his million dollar skill.

A golden shot means another poor victim,
Has come to a glittering end,
If you want to get rid of someone,
The man with the golden gun
Will get it done
He'll shoot anyone
With his golden gun.
