James Bond video games voted second favourite movie spin-off series

19-Sep-2004 • Gaming

The computer adventures of "Lord Of The Rings" has narrowly beated James Bond in a poll of around 155,000 customers of high street chain Game.

Nineteen percent of shoppers, taken from its database of reward cardholders, had a 007 computer game - reports the Scotsman.

An action hero who has made a more recent arrival on the silver screen, Spiderman, is the third most popular film spin-off, with 18% of customers owning a title.

Anna Macario, marketing director at Game, said: "The cross-over between games and cinema is increasing all the time. Not only are video games being made to be released at the same time as films at the cinema, but the trend is occurring the other way around too, for example with films like Tomb Raider."

"This demonstrates not only the increasing importance of video games, but also the advantages for companies and brands of using cross-media promotional and selling techniques."

The fourth most popular game based on a movie is Harry Potter, with 16% of Game customers owning a title.

It was followed by Final Fantasy (15%), Enter The Matrix (13%), Star Wars (12%), Resident Evil (11%), Tomb Raider (10%), and Star Trek (7%).

It is 26 years since Star Wars became the first ever film to spawn a video game franchise when a title was released for Atari’s VCS console.
