08-Jun-2010 • Media Alert

Show: Lewis Gilbert on Desert Island Discs
Channel: BBC Radio 4 (UK)
Date: Sunday 20th June 2010
Time: 11.15am-12.00noon BST

Film director, producer and screenwriter Lewis Gilbert joins Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs.

Born in London in 1920, Lewis Gilbert was a child actor in films during the Twenties and Thirties, before he began shooting documentary films for the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.

Gilbert made his name with a series of war films such as Reach For The Sky, Carve Her Name With Pride and Sink The Bismark. He went on to direct Alfie, starring Michael Caine, and three Bond movies; You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. In the Eighties he made Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.

Gilbert talks to Kirsty about his life, career and his favourite music, and describes how he would cope with life on BBC Radio 4's mythical desert island.
