The race to become the latest James Bond girl is on now that Daniel Craig is confirmed as 007. Jessica Alba is the first to start a campaign...

Bond Girl Race Is On
15th October 2005

Only hours after Daniel Craig was named as the sixth official James Bond 007, the race is on to land the coveted role of the next Bond girl.

Actresses and their publicists have started to get their candidacies off the ground already. As with any 007 film, decisions on the women are not made until the role of Bond is confirmed.

Producer Michael G. Wilson said at yesterday's London press conference, "The frame [for casting the girl] is very wide now. We wanted to make the 007 casting first. Now it's an open casting, we're looking for someone to do a very important job in this role."

Now that Craig is officially announced, the next major casting job is finding an actress with market potential capable of playing Vesper Lynd whilst also meeting the box-office movie prerequisites.

Director Martin Campbell added, "It's probably the best Bond girl role written. The two screenwriters [Purvis & Wade] adapted it, the character Vesper Lynd remains intact from Ian Fleming's book. We have to get a terrific actress. She has to look beautiful. She spends a lot of time with Bond, so whoever we pick, she has to have all of those attributes."

First to step up to the plate is current media hotty Jessica Alba - fresh from successful films "Sin City" and "Fantastic Four", which ironically both featured high profile Bond candidates (Clive Owen and Julian McMahon respectively). Apparently, the 24 year-old would be satisfying a life long dream if she was cast as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. "I'm a huge fan of Bond - ever since I was little. I've looked at Bond women as being the most drop-dead gorgeous in the world. I love the variety of them - they've been black and Asian and white and Eastern European and everything else", she told reporters yesterday.

The British press decided to stay away from a popular proven actress with good looks, and instead reported on Rachel Stevens of "S Club" fame. Rachel, who had just made her big screen debut in "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" alongside Rob Schneider, told The Sun: "I would love to be Daniel Craig's Bond girl. I'll think he'll be great in Casino Royale. It would be my dream job... totally fabulous and so glamorous. I love getting glammed up! I'd love to move into acting a bit more and the Bond films are classics. Some of the most famous movies around."

Daniel Craig was repeatedly asked about his preferences for a Bond girl at his press conference. All he would reveal was that Diana Rigg from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was his favourite from the series so far.

A casting decision may not be made until as late as January 2006, shortly before filming commences. In the mean time, it would seem that the majority of actresses in FHM's "sexiest" list will be touted for the role by one newspaper or another.

"Casino Royale", the 21st James Bond film, will be directed by Martin Campbell and shooting is scheduled to commence on January 17th 2006 for release on November 17th 2006, distributed by Columbia Pictures. British actor Daniel Craig will James Bond, the sixth actor cast as 007. Stay tuned to MI6 for the latest and most accurate coverage of Casino Royale.
