In their August 18th 2006 edition, Entertainment Weekly ushered in a new era of James Bond by featuring Daniel Craig as their cover story. To celebrate the upcoming Casino Royale, EW took a trip back in their time machine to see how the magazine might have covered the earlier 007s.

  Sean Connery - May 29th 1963

Bond #1 starred in six films, starting his first run with Dr No in 1963 to You Only Live Twice in 1967. Connery returned in 1971 for Diamonds Are Forever, and the unofficial outing Never Say Never Again in 1983.  

What Was Really Happening (Time)
New records are being set in a rising US economy.
Eleven weeks of terror rocks the French Canadian province of Quebec.
Ingmar Bergman stars in relentlessly somber and beautiful film Winter Light.


 


  George Lazenby - September 18th 1969

Bond #2 starred only once as 007 in the 1969 outing On Her Majesty's Secret Service" before revoking his licence to kill after he received bad advice that the series was on the slide.  

What Was Really Happening (Time)
President Nixon's eight-month period of relative immunity from criticism on the Viet Nam war was over.
35 million voters went to the polls throughout Western Germany this week.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid bursts on to cinema screens.


 


 

Roger Moore - June 27th 1973

Bond #3 started his record breaking run as 007 in 1973's Live And Let Die before finally retiring from the role in 1985's A View To A Kill - totaling seven consecutive films.  

What Was Really Happening (Time)
Five months pass without a plane hijacking in the US due to a security crack down.
The U.S. enlarges its role as a major international supplier of weapons.
The record industry is rocked with rumors of extortion, drug deals and million-dollar embezzlements.


 


  Timothy Dalton - July 31st 1987

Bond #4 finally took on the 007 role in 1987 having been offered it previously. Dalton starred in two films in the late 80's before resigning his double-o status in 1993 after a long series hiatus.

Mikhail Gorbachev pushes the Soviet Union toward a second revolution.
The embassy war between Paris and Tehran threatens to spiral out of control.
Madonna gives a concert that raises $400,000 for AIDS research.


 


  Pierce Brosnan - November 17th 1995

Bond #5 had a second shot at 007 after missing out due to NBC contracts in 1987. His debut outing in "GoldenEye" broke box-office records, but his tenure ended bitterly 10 years later.

What's left of the Kennedy myth takes a hit from a big-bucks expose.
The accused Unabomber's lawyers say he's schizophrenic as their defence.
Tinsel town sees the end of Katzenberg v. Disney case, dispute is settled.


 


  Daniel Craig - August 18th 2006

Bond #6 brought Bond back to basics and his beginnings with a gritty debut outing in "Casino Royale" in 2006. This is the actual retail cover of EW which featured the other Bond's inside.

The U.N. considers a peace deal in the war in Lebanon.
Face-off between sellers and buyers of homes as expectations of big profits fade.
