Progress on Bond 26 is not what the newspapers would have you believe

In the past month, a couple of major national newspapers ran pieces on the progress, or lack thereof, on the next James Bond film. Despite no tangible news, the papers managed to get some positive leaning soundbites from long-standing 007 fans and the spark of hope lit fires of internet rumours.

The cold hard truth is that nothing substantial is happening on Bond 26.

The Telegraph claimed a round of directors had been invited to "speed date" with EON about the gig. One of the names circulating was Edward Berger, but he categorically shot all talk of it down the following week: “That’s an absolute rumor. There’s no truth to it whatsoever. I would be very grateful if you put out that fire.”

The Times followed up a week later, leaning in on fans of the franchise for their insight, claiming the Amazon acquisition of MGM had delayed proceedings. Nothing could be further from the truth, as without the purchase, MGM would be in a weak position to green-light a $200m+ production. Other crazy ideas included an announcement at the Governors Awards when Barbara Broccoli is due to accept the Thalberg Award, an honorary Oscar. Don't hold your breath on November 17th.

Back in the harsh reality that Bond 26 is still years away, Broccoli formed the UK company 'The Othello Film Company' for EON to make a big-screen adaptation of Daniel Craig's Broadway production (Broccoli was a producer on that, too). The passion project is said to be funded by Qatari investment, a story MI6 first reported back in the summer.

More distractions for Broccoli away from Bond were revealed today it was announced she is one of three producers of a new musical - 'Buena Vista Social Club' - scheduled for a Broadway run in 2025.

Meanwhile, Amazon Studios is busy with 18 films slated for release and a further 75 productions in development.
