Casino Royale Graphic Novel
7th July 2016
A new graphic novel adaptation of Ian Fleming's debut 007 novel 'Casino Royale' is coming this November
By MI6 Staff
When Dynamite Comics announced they were bringing James Bond back to comic book form, after laying dormant in the format since the 1990s, the immediate focus was on new, modern-day adventures penned by the masterful Warren Ellis. The first of those new titles, 'VARGR', just completed its six-part run.
One of the other two strands to the publishing plans were "fresh visual adaptations of the classic Bond stories." MI6 can confirm that the first of these graphic novels will be based, naturally, on Ian Fleming's first novel 'Casino Royale.'
The debut title in Dynamite Entertainment's hardback graphic novel adaptations of the original Ian Fleming James Bond 007 novels, set in the period of the original work, will be released on November 22nd, 2016. Writer Van Jensen (who just departed a two-year stint on 'The Flash for DC Comics) is adapting Fleming's 'Casino Royale' with artwork by Matthew Southworth, who recently pencilled 'X-Men'. The new graphic novel will run 176 pages.
Although Dynamite are touting that "Casino Royale has never been adapted to the comic book medium," the book was adapted into comic strip form back in 1958 by artist John McLusky for the Daily Express. These newspaper strip series were collected and republished by Titan Books in recent years.
Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications, said, "It's over sixty years since the publication of Casino Royale, and now more than ever it's an exciting time to be a Bond fan. We're thrilled that 007 will be revisiting the world of comics, as Fleming's novels have a long and successful history in this medium. Dynamite are the perfect partners to take on the challenge of continuing this legacy."
