Anthony Horowitz will be returning to the literary canon of James Bond once again as he pens his third 007 continuation novel.
Ian Fleming Publications confirmed the news today to mark the birthday of James Bond's creator.
Horowitz, who previously authored Trigger Morris (2015) and Forever And A Day (2018) said: "I am very excited to have started my third Bond novel with the continuing support of the Ian Fleming estate. Forever and a Day looked at Bond’s first assignment. Trigger Mortis was mid-career. The new book begins with the death of Scaramanga and Bond’s return from Jamaica to confront an old enemy."
'Trigger Mortis' took place mid-way through the Ian Fleming timeline of original novels, whereas 'Forever And A Day' preceded it with James Bond being assigned his 007 code number. With the events of this new novel taking place at the end of Fleming's chronology, Horowitz will neatly bookend his run.
Corinne Turner, managing director of Ian Fleming Publications, said: "We're delighted and excited that Anthony has started his third Bond novel. From the nuggets we’ve seen so far, we are confident it will be another bestselling episode in the adventures of 007."
Michal Shavit, director of UK publisher Jonathan Cape, added: "We are incredibly excited to be announcing the news on Ian Fleming’s birthday that we have a new James Bond novel by Anthony to look forward to next year. We can’t wait to share more details with readers of the iconic spy’s latest adventure under Anthony’s masterful tenure."
MI6 understands Horowitz has been working on the draft for some time. It will be published in the UK by Jonathan Cape (an imprint of Penguin Random House) and in the USA by Harper Collins. The as-yet-untitled novel will hit shelves in May 2022.
The backlist of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels is currently published in the USA by Thomas & Mercer, an imprint owned by Amazon.
