Continuing our series of bespoke cocktails for the James Bond actors, MI6 presents the Pierce Brosnan Cocktail on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Emerging from County Louth, Irelend, Pierce Brendan Brosnan started his acting career in England. After making his way to America, Brosnan hit the big time with his smash hit television series “Remington Steele”. Brosnan’s dashing and debonair turn as Remington Steele led to his casting of James Bond after Roger Moore vacated the role. Ironically, the Remington role got Brosnan the Bond gig but also took it away from him. When the series was revived after Brosnan’s clinching of the 007 role, it was deemed that Brosnan could not be James Bond and Remington Steele at the same time. This led to Brosnan’s forced withdrawal from Bond.

That fabled luck of the Irish seemed to work for Pierce when the James Bond role opened up again after a five year series shutdown due to legal problems. Pierce Brosnan’s run of four James Bond films propelled the long running series to stellar new heights. Changing times and a creative rethink of the series trajectory prevented Brosnan from doing a fifth Bond film. During the Daniel Craig era of Bond, the Brosnan films were relegated to that same purgatory that Roger Moore’s Bond films previously inhabited: derrided as inferior. Today, Roger Moore’s Bond films have been fully rehabilitated by the cognoscenti and fans alike. Brosnan’s time for rehabilitation is about due. When the new James Bond actor is unveiled and the new iteration of the Bond series begins, the vibe will probably have more in common with the Brosnan era than the Craig era.

With that in mind, its time to raise a toast to Pierce Brosnan.

In a shaker with ice, pour:

  • 2 oz Irish Whiskey
  • 1 oz Jamaican Rum
  • 1 oz Pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon Agave syrup
  • 3 dashes Bitters
  • Squeeze of lime juice

Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with lime wheel or wedge.

The Irish whiskey suggests Pierce’s Irish heritage. The Jamaican rum represents James Bond’s spiritual home of Goldeneye - feel free to use the Blackwell 007 Rum. The pineapple represents the Hawaii of Pierce’s current home. The Agave hints of the Mexico of one of Pierce’s finest non-Bond films, “The Matador”.

Enjoy the Pierce Brosnan cocktail but "Mamma Mia", do it responsibly!
