The 97th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night wedged in a musical tribute to the James Bond franchise in reaction to the news that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were standing down and handing over creative control of 007 to Amazon.

Given how fans have received the news, the segment could be mistaken for an 'in memoriam' tribute. Making matters worse, the Academy editing team slipped in a wink from Sean Connery from 'Never Say Never Again' in the video montage.
Oscar-winner and 'Die Another Day' actress Halle Berry presented the segment: "Every year the Academy's Board of Governors honors extraordinary contributions to cinema with the Governor's Awards. Last fall these awards were presented to casting director Juliet Taylor, the legendary composer Quincy Jones, writer-director Richard Curtis, and producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli."

"Now, I had the great pleasure of working with Barbara and Michael on Die Another Day, and let me tell you they don't just produce Bond movies they were the heart and soul of this franchise for decades."

"Every generation has its Bond. You know the world revolves, it evolves and so does he, but that signature mix of danger style and intrigue... Well now, that's timeless. Tonight we pay tribute to Barbara and Michael, and to our favourite spy."

After the clip package, actress Margaret Qualley performed a dance number to the James Bond theme. She was followed by Lisa from Blackpink singing 'Live And Let Die,' Doja performed 'Diamonds Are Forever,' and Raye murdered 'Skyfall.'
