British theatre actor and playwrite Mark Burgess created a one-hander stage play based on Ian Fleming's life - 'The Man With The Golden Pen' - and toured UK theatres with the production from 2001. Burgess thoroughly researched the life of Ian Fleming and the adventures of his creation, James Bond, to craft a captivating two-act show. The first act is set around the time Fleming was penning Casino Royale whereas act two jumps forwards ten years to when Bond is a cinematic sensation and Fleming has grown weary.

Shortly after the tour wrapped in 2003, Burgess retired from acting to focus on writing. The baton was passed to actor Michael Chance to perform the show fifteen years later. Working with Louise Jameson, the show was retooled. Sir Roger Moore recorded the final two lines of the play when Bond talks to Fleming.
