Sometime around 2004 and 2005, producers were searching for their new James Bond after deciding to part ways with Pierce Brosnan. Dozens of potential candidates were interviewed over several months, with only four making it through to the final screentests.

One actor who did not make the final four was Michael Fassbender, who at the time had a dozen TV drama credits to his name.

He spoke recently to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about his brush with Bond and how he inadvertently talked down his chances in favour of the eventual successor: Daniel Craig.
