UPDATE (June 7th, 2022)

Microsoft may just be a week or two away from announcing 'GoldenEye 007' for the Xbox. It is likely that the original release plan was shelved due to the sensitivities of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February. With no E3 this year, Microsoft is instead hosting an Xbox Games Showcase event on June 14th.

Game achievements were once again spotted on official Xbox servers this week intimating that the release is imminent again. After news of their reappearance got out, Microsoft removed them today.  MI6 understands the Xbox release of 'GoldenEye 007' will be a light remaster of the original game - not a remake or reimagining. That means original 3D models will be used, in all their low-poly glory, as well as the same weapons and maps. The control schema will be updated to suit the Xbox controller and bring it more in line with modern FPS experiences. A major modification would be online multiplayer.

There is currently no word if a Nintendo Switch edition of the game will also be released, although Nintendo has worked to remove historical barriers to the sale of the game in Germany.

Tuesday 14th June is the likely day we will have confirmation of the Xbox release.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE (January 4th, 2022)

The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic James Bond game 'GoldenEye 007' could finally be seeing an official release on a modern-day platform.

Interest in the possible re-release of the title picked up momentum again last year when Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade remake, which was canceled at the last minute in 2007, was leaked online.

Also late last year, one of Nintendo's European partners requested the game's ban in Germany be reviewed. 'GoldenEye 007' has long been on a list of games in Germany considered as 'Media Harmful to Young Persons.' The review was won and the game was removed from the ban list, opening it up again for potential sales.

It now appears that Xbox is preparing a release of the original title as graphics, achievements, and artwork have been discovered on official Xbox servers. This is the original Nintendo 64 game ported to Xbox, rather than the XBLA HD remake.
